NAHCO NEW CLEARING CHARGES / RATE REGIME BEGINS

For close to two week now, freight forwarders operating in the Lagos international Airport have been in trying period due to two obvious issues from Nahco increment of handling rate by close to 300% to Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria’s decision to implement Federal Government directive which authorize immediate expel of Agent from Airport axis.

Major interest groups, including Geokaz Global, an Independent Cargo Handling Contractors and Publisher of Cargo Update (CU) have monitored closely. Cargo Update search light, was able to come up with facts on the two major issues that have grounded Air cargo operations in Lagos since 19th June 2012;

 Cargo Handling Charge increment by Nahco: The rift on rate increment between Nahco and ANLCA passed through phases over the period.  The Agents have acted swiftly and decisively to protest the interest of importers and consumers against introduction of arbitrary charges by Nahco. The National President of Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Mr. Shitu has made twin visits to Lagos Air Cargo Section during this warring period to discuss with major actors in the rate increment rift, including Members of the executive of ANLCA (Airport Branch), Nahco Top Management team, and other relevant stake holder on way out of the face-off. After second meeting, held on Tuesday, The National President came out and addressed 100s of teaming members. He reported the position his association took during their meeting with Nahco management and the demands of his team at the meeting. Mr. Shitu informed the Agents that Nahco and Agents have not discussed the proposed increment before the meetings, and therefore insisted that Nahco must return to status quo on the issue of increment. As to the response of Nahco at the meeting, it argued that since it had slash her increment by 150% or more, it can not give another position on the issue as her Managing Director was out of Lagos. Nahco also said that it had informed the Aviation Minister of her proposed increment, and the honorable minister has given her consent.
It would be called that Nahco had earlier this year signaled his intention to increase handling charges due to removal of petroleum subsidy, by 300%.

 Before ANLCA President Left for his APAPA head Office, he promised agents that there would be another meeting with the NAHCO Managing Director, and that work/or clearing operations might resume before the end of same week.

New Rate Regime Has come:  Nahco opened her advice section for collection of document and payment of handling charges. From the rating, and subsequent payment made by Remi, our liaison officer with Nahco advice section on Thursday, 28th June, 2012, we can authoritatively inform you that there is new rate regime in place at Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (Nahco).
