Inland Dry Port - Meaning and Importance

Inland Dry Port
Inland Dry Port is the inter-modal terminal which is situated inland and is directly connected by road or rail to a seaport, which functions as a centre for the transshipment of sea cargo into inland destinations, and performs services like customs clearance, maintenance of containers, storage, forwarding, etc which are performed in the seaports.
Inland port refers to a specialized facility for inter-modal containers (standardized shipping container) in international transport. Rather than goods being loaded and unloaded in such ports, shipping containers can just be transferred between ship and road vehicle or ship and train. The container may be transferred again between road and rail elsewhere and the goods are only loaded or unloaded at their point of origin or final destination. Inland port may also mean a similar model of a site linked to an airport or land border crossing rather than a seaport. It is a physical site located away from traditional land, air and coastal borders with the vision to facilitate and process international trade through strategic investment in multi-modal transportation assets and by promoting value-added services as goods move through the supply chain. An inland port is just such an inland site linked to a seaport. Inland ports, dry ports or inter-modal hubs can be used interchangeably.
A dry port is simply a port that is situated near the sea. In cases whereby the importer or exporter is far away from a sea port, it becomes inconvenient and difficult to co-ordinate and handle the goods properly. In order to proffer solution to this, the governments of certain countries allowed CFS (Container Freight Station) to handle export and import formalities under customs supervision.
Importance of Inland Dry Port
· Inland dry port increases seaport productivity. It fastens the flow of cargo between ships and major land transportation networks, by creating a more central distribution point.
· Inland dry port increases seaport capacity. Container transfer at the seaport can be sped up and container handling space can be greatly reduced.
· Inland dry port reduces congestion at seaport and even at seaport cities.
