TIPS ON HOW TO FAST TRACK CUSTOMS CLEARANCE

DUTY PAYMENT COMPLIANCE PROCEDURES
One recently applauded aviation policy introduced by present Government of Nigeria is “48-72 Hours Cargo Clearance Policy”. The federal Government, led by President Goodluck Jonathan had instructed that all shipment/or imported goods should be cleared out of Nigeria ports within 48-72 hrs to make importation easier for international businesses and other relevant stake holders.
Of cause we understand the desire of value owners “Fast Customs Clearance and Delivery of Shipments”, and we have recognized that most importers have little knowledge of duty payment procedures / or compliance in Nigeria, and that’s why we have put these TIPS together for new and existing importers of cargoes and or shipments into Nigeria.

WHEN TO BEGIN DUTY COMPLIANCE PROCESSING: most importers wait for days, weeks or sometimes months for cargo/shipments to arrive Nigeria ports before starting duty payment running’s. Such attitude would no doubt cause delay in cargo clearance of the shipments. The best time will recommend for customers and an importer alike is immediately the shipment is handed to the carrier at the country of origin OR at most 48hours before the arrival of shipment in Nigeria. Statistics shows that importers who make available a shipper’s copy gets his/her shipments’ delivered two days earlier compare to those who wait until their shipments arrive port of destination before providing shipper’s copy.

WHAT DOCUMENT YOU WILL USE: It is possible for some freight agents to interface between customs and importers in this regards. Your freight agent should be able to use a shipper’s copy, which you already have from your supplier/shipper at the port of loading or country of origin. If you don’t still have a Shipper’s copy (WAYBILL) SENT/SCAN to you by your supplier/shipper from your shipments’ country of origin, then we advice that you request for it. (That’s when you’re sure that your supplier/shipper has delivered your shipment with a carrier OR Airliner). See displayed sample of Shipper’s copy

WHAT HAS THIS GOT TO DO WITH DELAY: Waiting till your goods Arrives destination for you to begin duty compliance processing would no doubt add no less than 24-48 hours to Government stipulated clearance period of 48-72hours. This is because there are stages that your documents and or papers must pass-through before your shipments examined. And of cause without customs examination of shipments, clearance would not be concluded.

PUT YOUR SHIPPER’S COPY TO WORK PRIOR TO CARGO ARRIVAL: As soon as your consignment is delivered to your carrier (Airline), and the shipment is schedule for a flight, the carrier is expected to forward / or declare to relevant stake holders, including Customs at the country of Origin all loaded shipments. Since one of the cores’ of customs is to collect revenue for and un-behalf of Government, they will be willing to attend to duty payment compliance. This is an advantage for your freight agent to approach departments Customs with the shipper’s copy you have provided for customs duty compliance processes to kick off. Request for FREE Quote Now
