Freight Forwarders, Nahco and Sahcol Settled on Storage- Importers to Pay Demurrage of #8.5 Per Kilo

The second phase of delay in cargo clearing which began on 13th Sept between Freight forwarder's body and two major handling companies (Nahco and Sahcol) just came to an end few hours ago. The problem started when the two handling companies demanded that importers (through freight agents) are to pay demurrage on all the days that the warehouses was shut by Nigeria Customs.

Positions: The freight agent body led by Alloy Igwe demurred  that members will not pay any demmurrage since the closure was not natural, but rather artificial and not caused by the agents or importers. This was the position of freight agents since last week after the re-opening order by Customs boss.

Resolution: After days of negotiation on this issue of demurrage between stake holders, the two handling companies have shifted ground by agreeing to let go 80% of the demurrage, while importers, through their agents are to pay 20% demurrage on all the days that the warehouses was shut by the customs.

How much is Demurrage? Demurrage is #8.5 (Eight Naira, fifty kobo) per kilo per day.

When will cargo clearing begins: Cargo clearing will begin immediately with documentation; demurrage payment, proper customs documentation, and compliance to customs duty payment. This could take two to three days from now because of congestion and pile-ups
