CARGO CLEARANCE DELAY! LATEST ISSUES WITH FREIGHT FORWARDERS AND FAAN IN NAHCO COMPLEX, LAGOS- NIGERIA

CARGO CLEARANCE DELAY! LATEST ISSUES WITH FREIGHT FORWARDERS AND FAAN IN NAHCO COMPLEX, LAGOS- NIGERIA

Proposed site for new terminal. Formerly used by Freight agents
Back Ground: The face-off began after Government concluded arrangements to hand over the land, seat of operations and where freight forwarders use as luncheon to observe their official break time period between 12.00 noon – 2.00pm (also observed by all other Government agencies operating at the terminal). The Government through her representative (FAAN) had in several meetings informed freight forwarders of possible relocation. It claimed her action was to cooperate with concessionary deal, which Federal Government embarked upon in her efforts to building additional new terminals across the country.

Position of Freight Forwarders: Freight agents had always been in support of any project that is aimed at improving structures and economy. It has however cooperated with FAAN during the demolition, even when FAAN is acting differently to her promise of providing good place where agents would be relocated to before the commencement of the project. The questions that freight agents are asking are clear to her membership; why would FAAN went ahead to demolish their place when it has not build any structure on the land that it intended for the relocation exercise?  Why should Freight agents continue to pay double fees for single service that her members are not even appreciated for?

FREIGHT BROKERS OUTSIDE NAHCO COMPLEX
Why FAAN Denied Freight agents Access into the Terminal: The true story of why FAAN denied agents access into the terminal should better be reported to the public in other to clear some misconception about the present situation that may continue to cause delay in clearance of goods, and in effect affect international trade.   Agents were caught unaware with the demolition that took place early last week. When FAAN had not officially handed over any site (including the planed limousine park) to the executive of the international trade interface body, why would they go ahead with the planned demolition? “It was a breach of agreements; this is enough reason to instruct our members not to pay any monies consider unofficial or other imposed port fees by FAAN representatives at the terminal that duplicate charges”. The stoppage of the fees since Thursday last week by agents’ body had led to FAAN denying agents access to the terminal since Friday 14th Sept, 2012.

The Possible effects of warring Parties: It has entered day four since fracas between the international freight brokers in Nigeria and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria began. The effects of this action can not be ignored, considering the fact that every Nigerian would be affected; market place, businesses, importers, traders, manufacturers and production companies.

All in all, importers would be forced to pay extra charges (demurrage or Storage) when the air is eventually cleared. HOW MUCH IS DEMURRAGE
